And the picture, which stars Joey Jing and Ki Hong Lee, landed with a relative thud. The good news is that if it doesn't deliver here or abroad, Fox can merely say "Okay, the story is over." and reboot in a decade.īroad Green debuted the “barely screened for critics” PG-13 horror film Wish Upon into 2,250 theaters this weekend. You’d think that would be a normal stipulation for an ongoing franchise, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule this summer.īut if it doesn't hold up, it will certainly shoot a hole in the whole "Rotten Tomatoes controls the box office" conversation we've had this summer. Unlike Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars and (relatively speaking) the Spider-Man series, critics and audiences embraced the prior installment and presumably desired an additional sequel. With rave reviews and a track record of quality, War for the Planet of the Apes is a rare franchise this summer that doesn’t have to apologize for the last entry and/or justify its continued existence. War for the Planet of the Apes was less a huge departure than (in marketing terms) a rehash of the last film. Comparatively, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a human-focused sci-fi drama whereas Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was an apes versus humans action thriller. Moreover, even with the reviews and the buzz, War for the Planet of the Apes didn’t look and feel all that different from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But it’s a sign that interest in the franchise peaked three years ago. ![]() ![]() In a moviegoing environment where big sequels are opening well below their predecessors, this isn’t a disastrous drop. Even with very good reviews, Justin Lin's Star Trek sequel had a smaller opening, smaller legs and a smaller domestic total than the predecessors. And yeah, last year, even as the first mostly well-liked live-action blockbuster of summer 2016 since Captain America: Civil War, the film opened with $58m (compared to the $83m Thurs-Sun debut of Star Trek Into Darkness and the $79m debut of Star Trek) and earned just $158m (versus $228m for Star Trek Into Darkness and $256m for Star Trek). ![]() The reason I used that example is because that's the multiplier for Star Trek Beyond, another acclaimed third entry in a previously super popular sci-fi reboot franchise.
